Laramie Art Guild: Mike Beeman Pastel Presentation

Mike Beeman is fast becoming one of the better known pastel artists in America. He is a gracious man who generously shares his knowledge of the medium during his demonstrations and workshops. Mike will be giving a workshop hosted by the Laramie Art Guild in Laramie, Wyoming on 2/21/2015. Interested parties may call 307-399-5763 for details.

Mike Beeman Pastel Presentation

Mike Beeman demonstrates the painting of a chickadee
on UArt using alcohol
as a medium for rendering the under-painting.

The background & mass of the chickadee are loosely rendered.
Outlines are virtually non-existent allowing corrections
of shape and color to be established both within and outside the figure.

Specific details of the beak and eye are accentuated
and a greater value range established.

Mike paints with the pastel medium as he demonstrates
the rendering of a chickadee and a common sparrow.

Please note the transfer of colors both within & outside
the figure. Middle values were established first
and lighter and darker values added afterwards.
The sharing of these hues prevents
the bird from feeling like a "cut-out"
pasted onto the background.

The mere suggestion of feathers and legs allows for a more
expressive rendering. Pure whites are avoided and either
warm or cool whites are selected. This image was worked on a felt grey
Canson paper, which allows the artists to render in both lighter and darker
values as he developed the form.

Threading the Needle

The Richeson School of Art and Gallery accepted Jeanie Schlump's pastel,

Textured Tanker

The layering of textures upon the surface of this tanker car
piqued my interest; fuel oil over letters, letters over rust,
rust peeling away to expose the underlying
structure, shadows casting over the entirety.

Quang Ho

Jeanie Schlump attended a pastel demo in Denver
by Quang Ho. The pastel was developed
very loosely over a period of 2 hours
as Quang Ho explained his process.

Black & white photo above as seen on computer screen
was used by Quang Ho for his demonstration. 

  

Using the broad side of pastel sticks, Quang Ho developed large
passages of dark and light values on a medium ground.

Colors were assessed randomly but still keeping the values
consistent with the picture. At this stage, the brown page
is the complementary color which is showing
through the various greens.

Quang started with a box of Terry Ludwig landscape greens,
then added complementary reds, still relying on the value shapes
as his reference.

 in the center of the room. I snapped a quick picture and drew
part of it in my studio that evening.

Laramie Art Guild hosts Chuck Egnaczak

                   Chuck Egnaczak from Works of Wyoming

presented the LAG with two sessions discussing 

The Business of Art.

Chuck gave the members of the LAG
pointers on self-promotion, approaching galleries, as well as
pros & cons of websites, blogs, and Facebook
accounts.

Egnaczak's dynamic personality got all the members 
of our guild involved in his presentation and started us
thinking about our individual goals.

Chuck asked each member questions 
to make sure that everyone
interacted with him and other members of the guild.

Danny in Progress

The artist has added more enhanced colors and glazes to the 16" x 20" acrylic
sketch which was started at an earlier date. It was also decided to
clothe the figure in a lambskin coat.

The Laramie Art Guild hired a senior gentleman to pose as a cowboy for this month's modeling session. This is the preliminary underpainting on a 16"x 20" acrylic painting on canvas. Modeling sessions are the 3rd Saturday of each month from 10am-noon, Room 110 at LCCC in Laramie. Models are provided free of charge for all guild members.

George in Green

George posed for the LAG again this month. I realized after I started painting that I had not brought any blues whatsoever and I had only permanent green light. Most of this was rendered in Burnt umber, burnt sienna, cadmium red light, yellow ochre & permanent green light. Upon returning to the studio I mixed phthalo blue and burnt umber together to form the darkest darks.
