Pastel Painting Light and Color, Desmond O'Hagan

The Laramie Art Guild viewed this dvd by 

Desmond O'Hagan for May's meeting. 

This dvd was quite informative and could easily be 

applied to oils and acrylics. 

Completed pastel downloaded from the web.

Patterned surfaces; the easy approach

The top pattern was made with crumpled newsprint 

to resemble a floral design.

The bottom texture was achieved with 3

values of acrylic paint splattered with  a 

toothbrush to achieve the 

resemblance to graniteware.

First acrylic landscapes...ever!

Using only 4 colors + white, 

the class followed Jeanie LeCompte's demonstration

(see below)

on how to simplify and layer the acrylics;

allowing ample drying time between layers.

Blue, burnt umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre +

white can make quite a colorful scene!

March Meeting 2019

Despite a heavy Spring snowstorm, 

6 members of the Laramie Art Guild

Attended our March meeting. 

  

Chuck Egnazak, a creative director for 

art marketing, gave a short presentation

about ideas for re-generating our guild.

Afterwards, 5 members of the LAG  took part in our

live modeling session. This is free to all members 

and costs $5 for non-members. 

Our model was from Kenya and proved to be quite a 

challenge to all of us artists. 

The Laramie Art Guild's

April's meeting will feature an ACRYLIC workshop 

given by Jeanie LeCompte.

This will be free to all LAG members and $25

for non-members.

LAG Show at the Regency

LAG program: Frida Kahlo 4/2/16 10-12, LCCC

Frida Kahlo's work is renowned internationally
as emblematic of Mexiacn national
and indigenous traditions, and by feminists
for its depiction of the female experience
and form. Frida Created at least
140 paintings, of which 55 are self portraits.
"I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."

February LAG Meeting

Members of the LAG viewed a Wyoming PBS movie,
Drawn to Yellowstone, a film about the impact of Thomas Moran's
art & the photographs of William H Jackson on
the persuasion of Congress to set aside Yellowstone and
designate it as the first national park in 1872.

Three members, Jeanie Schlump, Susan Tupper,
and Sandra Guzzo brought in 6 current art projects to show the LAG.

opted to draw a still life during the LAG's monthly
meeting.

LAG Sponsors Mike Beeman pastel workshop

Mike Beeman demonstrated his method of developing the still life

by working with the mass of items rather than outlines

to develop the objects.

Objects are rendered both internally with value and color steps as well 

as externally to carve the shapes from the outside in

and to allow the figures and ground to merge together. 

People in attendance came as far as Louisville, Colorado, 

Harmony, Cheyenne, Rock River & Laramie, WY.

Mike's skill as both an artist and teacher were greatly

appreciated by all. Thank you, Mike!

Mike Beeman Pastel Presentation

Mike Beeman demonstrates the painting of a chickadee
on UArt using alcohol
as a medium for rendering the under-painting.

The background & mass of the chickadee are loosely rendered.
Outlines are virtually non-existent allowing corrections
of shape and color to be established both within and outside the figure.

Specific details of the beak and eye are accentuated
and a greater value range established.

Mike paints with the pastel medium as he demonstrates
the rendering of a chickadee and a common sparrow.

Please note the transfer of colors both within & outside
the figure. Middle values were established first
and lighter and darker values added afterwards.
The sharing of these hues prevents
the bird from feeling like a "cut-out"
pasted onto the background.

The mere suggestion of feathers and legs allows for a more
expressive rendering. Pure whites are avoided and either
warm or cool whites are selected. This image was worked on a felt grey
Canson paper, which allows the artists to render in both lighter and darker
values as he developed the form. 

Laramie Art Guild hosts Chuck Egnaczak

                   Chuck Egnaczak from Works of Wyoming

presented the LAG with two sessions discussing 

The Business of Art.

Chuck gave the members of the LAG
pointers on self-promotion, approaching galleries, as well as
pros & cons of websites, blogs, and Facebook
accounts.

Egnaczak's dynamic personality got all the members 
of our guild involved in his presentation and started us
thinking about our individual goals.

Chuck asked each member questions 
to make sure that everyone
interacted with him and other members of the guild.

Laramie Art Guild Tours UW Art Museum

Wendy Bredehoft led our group through a display of Sci-Fi movie prints and advertisements.

Golden Acrylics Glazes & Pours Workshop

Mary Morrison from Golden Acrylics gave a workshop for our guild featuring Golden's different mediums & paints. Members enjoyed this wholeheartedly. She will be having another workshop featuring transfers at Jerry's Artarama in Ft. Collins Oct 29th.

October LAG Meeting

Members of the LAG had a short business meeting followed by a critique. Tony and Sandra Guzzo, Gerry Jones, Erika Ziegler, and Jeanie Schlump all brought in work for critique. The program featured proper presentation of work including the size choice of matting and floating mats for small 3D collectibles. Members are encouraged to bring in work for critique and help with presentation. LAG meetings are always held the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 AM in Room 110 of LCCC in Laramie. Inger Mehring provided the LAG with these photographs.
